EDUCATION NEWS

  • Volunteers in Public Schools has gifted 3,000 new books and helped 1,000 students each year—now the organization is seeking more volunteers for the upcoming 2025–2026 school year in local public schools.  WAFB 9
  • Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) has donated 3,000 new books to children and helped around 1,000 students each year in East Baton Rouge Parish since 1981; the organization is now seeking extra volunteers for the 2025-26 school year.  WAFB 9

FINANCE NEWS

  • Former and current Louisiana residents received $69.3 million in unclaimed property funds this fiscal year (the second highest amount since 2021) as the Treasury reported that $1.2 billion still remains unclaimed. Treasurer John Fleming said one in six residents has funds available with claims averaging $900 (including payroll checks, old bank accounts, and stock certificates).  WVLA

  • Mayor-President Sid Edwards announced Operation Stay Cool to help eligible residents in East Baton Rouge Parish get critical air conditioning and heating repairs or replacements up to $1,000—using funds from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program Crisis funding and serving households with incomes below 60% of the state median.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Oaks Medical Center welcomed 17 new doctors in training to its Graduate Medical Education program. Nine new internal medicine residents and eight transitional year residents from 11 states and three countries will learn from experienced doctors at North Oaks and other facilities — they will get hands-on training in various medical fields.  The Advocate
