ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person was displaced early Friday by a house fire on Iowa Street that caused smoke and water damage—Baton Rouge Fire responded at 1:19 a.m. and controlled the blaze within 30 minutes while investigators look into the cause.  WBRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Capital Region Crime Stoppers reported that police are searching for a man wanted for second-degree murder — illegal use of weapons in connection with a woman’s fatal shooting.  WAFB 9
  • Three men were arrested in Livingston Parish for alleged indecent behavior with juveniles and computer-aided solicitation of a minor — the LPSO ICAC Task Force, with help from other agencies, conducted the investigation — as law enforcement uses forensic methods to track online predators.  WVLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Angola Prison Rodeo will take place on October 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola—gates open at 8 a.m. with events starting at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and proceeds will support inmate rehabilitation and reentry programs.  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Councilman Darryl Hurst and Lillie Turner from Lillie’s Kitchen are preparing for the fourth annual District 5 Back 2 School Bash happening Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lillie’s Kitchen on Airline Highway—local kids will receive free haircuts, school physicals, eye exams, uniforms and backpacks with school supplies while schools welcome students for the new year.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Zachary councilman John LeBlanc accused city attorney John Hopewell of pressuring him during a May 13 meeting to support a tax millage by warning that a political action committee would target his future campaign; emails sent on May 14, May 20, and June 3 show Hopewell repeatedly asking for written confirmation that his comments were not taken as threats — LeBlanc did not reply.  WBRZ
  • The Department of Transportation and Development said I-10 lane closures in Baton Rouge will run overnight Sunday through Tuesday for a widening project (eastbound lanes will close from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday and Monday; westbound lanes will close from 7 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday).  The Advocate
