ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • St. John Baptist Church, a century-old landmark on Big Four Corners Road in Four Corners, burned down on July 31 after lightning struck it—firefighters from over 10 agencies battled the blaze while no injuries were reported.  WVLA

CRIME NEWS

  • The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul Bowden, 59, of Denham Springs for pandering in an investigation spanning over seven years into unlicensed massage parlors on Airline Highway—authorities said the search uncovered evidence of illicit massage activity and reports of human trafficking.  WVLA
  • Andre Weatherspoon, wanted in the murder of his live-in girlfriend Tonyetta Loveless who died one day after her 42nd birthday following a fight on November 29, is now in custody after his arrest in Alabama.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Public schools in East Baton Rouge will host Enrollment Day on Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.—families can complete registration and get essential information before classes begin Aug. 7.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Project leaders for the University Lakes Restoration project held an open house on Thursday to update residents on phase one work that has dredged City Park Lake and Lake Erie and is now installing shoreline landscaping—with May Street improvements scheduled for completion in September. The project will move into phase two by deepening University Lake and adding bike paths, and it remains funded through 2026.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Louisiana health officials confirmed 17 cases of Vibrio vulnificus with four deaths in 2025 — a number far above the decade’s average — and they are warning Baton Rouge residents to cover open wounds and avoid raw seafood when near warm coastal waters. Officials advise cleaning and protecting any cuts to help reduce the risk of severe illness.  WAFB 9
  • Louisiana health officials reported that Vibrio vulnificus—a flesh-eating bacteria—has surged this year with 17 cases and 4 deaths mostly linked to seawater exposure. Across the Gulf Coast there have been 32 cases and 8 deaths, with Florida reporting 13 cases and 4 deaths while Mississippi and Alabama each recorded one case.  The Advocate
