CRIME NEWS

  • The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Malcolm Jackson, 53, of Plaquemine on Aug. 1 for multiple drug charges including intent to distribute cocaine, crack, hydrocodone and Xanax—he had his sentence reduced on Jan. 17 by a former President and shortly returned to drug activity.  WVLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents and visitors can explore the new Baton Rouge Film Trail along more than 100 filming locations using the SetJetters app. A ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling will occur at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Manship Theatre—kicking off the Underground Film Festival that showcases local film makers.  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Baker schools announced a partnership with Helix Community Charter Schools to expand campuses including Park Ridge Achievement Academy and a second location on the Bethany Chuch campus — featuring new science labs and art rooms. Helix Community Charter Schools will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Park Ridge campus on Monday at 9:30 a.m.  WBRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials at the Old River Control Structure warned that sediment buildup and heavier rainfall are raising concerns about the Mississippi River changing course; federal agencies will study and adjust management plans to prevent major disruptions—experts say the risks could affect flood control and water supplies.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge postponed the Aug. 25 remedial hearing and stayed the case after state leaders asked to delay redrawing the House and Senate voter maps until a Supreme Court decision on redistricting is reached. Plaintiffs worry that waiting for guidance may leave no time for a new map before the October 2027 election—state officials expect the issue to be addressed when the court’s term begins on October 6.  The Advocate
  • During a special Metro Council meeting Wednesday, council members approved changes to retiree healthcare coverage expected to save about $19 million—helping reduce a budget gap caused by incorporating St. George. Medicare changes will begin in October and voters will see the Thrive EBR proposal on the November 15 ballot to further stabilize services without raising taxes.  WBRZ
