Good morning, Baton Rouge.

A Baton Rouge man—35-year-old Christian Coleman—was arrested on Sunday, August 10 at 2:40 p.m. when he allegedly tried to run over his live-in girlfriend during a domestic dispute on the 5600 block of Cheryl Road, and she sustained serious injuries that led to hospitalization while he now faces charges for attempted second-degree murder and domestic abuse battery.

Attorneys in a BRPD corruption case said they will challenge a recording used as evidence to dispute claims of misconduct in the investigation.

They aim to contest the recording's use in court to help keep the trial fair.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said prosecutors agreed to a plea deal with 17-year-old Nicholas Mcquirter—who fatally shot Dezmon Hamilton during a disputed gunfight in a home in 2021 while visiting Hamilton’s 14-year-old daughter—because they believed a trial would almost certainly acquit him, though Hamilton's family expressed outrage over the reduced negligent homicide charge.

On August 13, the Baton Rouge Police Department held its second Equalizer self-defense class for women at its headquarters—9000 Airline Highway—offering free training.

Future sessions will be held on August 18 and 20 and require attendance at all four classes to complete the program.
