  • Community volunteers Mysti Byrnes and Julie Gerdes Becnel plan Perk Up Perkins Demo Day on Saturday, Aug 16 in the busy Overpass District to test a planned crosswalk at Ferndale Avenue and Perkins Road. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes crossing demos, activities for children, and a community cleanup — all to show the need for safer pedestrian access.  225 Magazine

BUSINESS NEWS

  • UnitedHealth Group completed its $3.3 billion acquisition of Baton Rouge-based hospice company Amedisys on Thursday morning after overcoming a two-year process that included a DOJ settlement requiring Amedisys to pay $1.1 million and divest 164 facilities—Amedisys will now operate as a UnitedHealth subsidiary.  WBRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, Baton Rouge man Christian Coleman—with a history of domestic violence—was arrested after allegedly running over his live-in girlfriend as she fled during an argument, and police later captured him when customers called 911 after he blocked her escape.  The Advocate
  • Federal authorities indicted Kleider Enrique Garcia-Ochoa on charges of attempted enticement of a minor and attempted transfer of obscene material—he allegedly tried to lure someone he believed was a 15-year-old from Baton Rouge in late March and pleaded not guilty when he was arrested on April 1.  WAFB 9
  • Baker Police are seeking information on a missing 19-year-old woman and her three-month-old son who were last seen Monday around 7:30 a.m. in the 5800 block of Lavey Lane—anyone with details is urged to call 225-775-6000.  WBRZ
  • Three men were arrested in Livingston Parish for having online material that shows sexual abuse of children—Austin Fridge, 30, from Maurepas is charged with filming animal abuse and sharing such material, John Gabriel Sullivan, 51, from Holden is charged with 15 counts, and Caleb Blayne Yates, 22, from Livingston is charged with 22 counts—and they are held at the detention center while additional charges may come later.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court said Thursday that a map drawn by Louisiana lawmakers broke the Voting Rights Act by splitting Black voters across districts and packing them into others. A Baton Rouge judge canceled the 2022 maps and the attorney general said his office is reviewing its options while the Supreme Court considers similar cases.  WBRZ

  • Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is hosting its first Barbershop Bash at Webb’s Barbershop, 401 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive, on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon to offer free prostate and colorectal cancer screenings and health education — walk-ins are welcome though appointments are encouraged.  WVLA
