EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ East Baton Rouge Parish schools overspent their budgets for the second year in a row and will move nearly $4.9 million from the general operating fund to the Child Nutrition Program — a move that will shrink its unassigned fund balance by 5% and lower reserves for emergencies. Superintendent LaMont Cole asked the school board to revise both last year's and the current year's program, and a final vote is scheduled for Thursday. WBRZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services Chief of Staff Ashley Sias told the Baton Rouge Press Club on Monday that the agency is launching night shift jobs to reduce staff burnout from double shifts—over 800 applicants are contending for 53 positions statewide. WBRZ
- ➤ The state legislature awarded $1 million to Feeding Louisiana to help food banks purchase local produce and proteins while supporting Louisiana farmers. The funds, approved Aug. 8 (by the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget), will be distributed through five regional food banks. WBRZ
- ➤ State Rep. Dixon McMakin said officials are discussing plans to reconnect Baton Rouge and New Orleans after the Mardi Gras Line opened, marking nearly 56 years since riders had passenger train service. They will track ticket sales to decide if a new station near the Electric Depot on Government Street should be built—complementing Amtrak’s bus service between the cities. WBRZ

- ➤ A health conference on aging will be held Sept. 18-19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Raising Cane’s River Center, 275 S. River Road — where seniors, caregivers, and professionals will join expert-led sessions, interactive workshops, wellness screenings, and resource exhibits. The East Baton Rouge Council on Aging will accept inquiries from vendors, sponsors, and presenters — aiming to connect the community and support healthy aging in Baton Rouge. WVLA

- ➤ LSU freshman football player Tamarcus Cooley helped a woman and her two kids on the interstate after her tire blew out on Thursday. He stopped on his way home from practice and changed the tire without accepting payment—explaining he would want someone to help his mother if the roles were reversed. WBRZ
- ➤ Three LSU players were named to the AP Preseason All-America teams on Monday—quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. landed on the second team while linebacker West Weeks made the first team.
