ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Officials updated on Sunday after an explosion at Smitty's Supply Inc. in Rosedale forced evacuations and caused environmental concerns. The fire was 90% contained by noon Sunday—crews removed debris and teams deployed barriers in the Tangipahoa River while the evacuation order remained in effect within a one-mile radius. WBRZ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police said five separate shootings occurred Sunday morning in Baton Rouge — one man died on Plank Road during a fight while others were injured on Florida Boulevard, North Acadian Thruway, Highland Road, and Belhaven Trace Drive, and officials urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers. - ➤ Baton Rouge police said a 36-year-old woman named Jonique Brown died after being shot multiple times yesterday early morning at the 3400 block of Plank Road when a large fight started and shots were fired (no suspect has been found as the investigation continues). WBRZ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A new report from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation shows that premature deaths from cardiovascular disease, accidents, homicide, kidney disease and infant mortality occur up to four times more often in Baton Rouge than nationally—highlighting a serious local health challenge. The analysis estimates that targeted community efforts in health care, safer roads and improved prenatal services could reduce early deaths by 25%. The Advocate
- ➤ State health officials warn that Vibrio vulnificus, a dangerous bacteria in coastal waters, can enter through cuts or raw shellfish and cause serious infections. Louisiana recorded 20 hospitalizations with 4 deaths this summer — people should cover wounds and wash with soap after exposure — to help prevent life-threatening illness. WBRZ
