COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents of Roseland are returning to their homes after an explosion at Smitty's Supply covered the area in ash and soot and forced an evacuation, while many ask what chemicals were released and why cleanup may fall to the town. Mayor Van Showers said at a Monday night town hall that state tests are still pending (and a drive-through supply distribution is planned today at Florida Parish Arena for those affected).  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nexus Louisiana announced plans to move its corporate headquarters to 440 on Third Street in downtown Baton Rouge, and the relocation will be complete by July 1. Officials said the new location will bring the company closer to city and state leaders — fueling closer ties with community partners.  WVLA

CRIME NEWS

  • Between Aug. 14 and 21, Ascension Parish Jail booked multiple individuals on charges including failure to appear (bench warrants), drug offenses, theft and domestic abuse.  The Advocate
  • East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office arrested Jamarcus Harper, 33, for first-degree murder in connection with the death of a three-month-old boy who died on May 18 after sustaining non-accidental blunt force trauma from an alleged fall on May 16—authorities detailed the timeline as Harper left the child after he was put down for a nap before the incident was discovered.  WVLA
  • Police are investigating multiple shootings in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning, August 24, where incidents on Florida Boulevard, Highland Road, North Acadian Thruway, Plank Road and Belhaven Trace Drive left several people injured and resulted in the deaths of two individuals—Jonique Brown and D’Anthony Brown.  WAFB 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has delayed work on the I-10 widening project so that Dalrymple Drive will close from 7 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. today—this closure will affect the road between East Lakeshore Drive and March Street.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by BRAF shows Baton Rouge residents live an average of 74 years — about four years less than the national average. The report found heart disease, homicide, accidents and infant mortality are much higher here and reducing these causes could lower premature deaths by 25%.  WBRZ
  • A new report from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation shows that life expectancy in East Baton Rouge is about 74 years, with over half of early deaths caused by heart disease, accidents, homicide, infant deaths, and kidney disease—rates that are significantly higher than the national average. The report finds that reducing these higher rates by about 25% could help improve community health in the parish.  WVLA

  • Football season is underway for EBR Schools as district leaders, city officials & student-athletes met at A.W. Mumford Stadium on Monday to preview the Battle on the Bluff jamboree, where 12 teams will compete on Thursday, Aug 28 and Friday, Aug 29 to showcase local talent.  WVLA
