ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Baton Rouge family was displaced by a house fire that broke out at about 2:07 p.m. Wednesday on the 10300 block of Toledo Bend Avenue—firefighters quickly extinguished the flames while residents escaped with no injuries but the home suffered smoke and water damage. WAFB 9
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Heavy machinery removed the Beta Sigma chapter plot from Southern campus on Thursday—officials expelled the fraternity for hazing violations that led to Caleb Wilson’s death and the arrest of three members. WBRZ
- ➤ Two people were taken to the hospital after an early Thursday morning shooting on Government Street (yesterday). WBRZ
- ➤ Ascension prosecutors argued that Prairieville man Jerome Lilly failed to provide the written notice required to claim self defense in his case for second-degree murder in the July 2022 shooting of Tarrence Williams—his trial has been stayed pending an appeal. The Advocate
- ➤ Baton Rouge Police Department is searching for a man wanted for second-degree murder and illegal use of dangerous instrumentalities—authorities have not released any further details. WAFB 9
- ➤ An overnight shooting near the intersection of Government and Maximilian Street left two people with serious injuries and they were taken to hospital. WAFB 9
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a SCOTUS brief on August 27 in Louisiana v. Callais—she challenged the state's race-based congressional maps for possible breaches of the 14th and 15th Amendments. SCOTUS will hear the case on October 15—Solicitor General Benjamin Aguiñaga will present Louisiana's arguments. WAFB 9
- ➤ Baton Rouge council voted on Wednesday to add a 1% sales tax in the LSU Economic Development District—leaders said it may eventually help fund a planned LSU arena, though some critics claimed that the tax's use is not yet set and could burden local businesses. LSU Reveille
