  • The Louisiana NAACP State Conference is set to hold its 83rd annual Convention and Leadership Conference in Baton Rouge (Oct 2–4) where community leaders will gather to discuss economic sustainability, criminal justice, and voting rights. Guest speaker Roland Martin will address the Freedom Fund Banquet (Oct 4, 7:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel with tickets at $150 and tables for 10 at $1,500.  WBRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Resident Edward Cooper of St. Helena Parish said that a dead and weak tree on McDaniel Road—standing only 30 feet from the roadway instead of the required 60 feet—poses a risk to residents and school buses, and he fears it could fall and cause a deadly accident.  WVLA

CRIME NEWS

  • Former officer Donald Steele will be sentenced on Sept. 8 for misdemeanor malfeasance in office amid controversy over his alleged misconduct during a 2021 traffic stop—former police chief Greg Phares said such behavior damages public trust.  WBRZ
  • Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard is reviewing the incident after a social media video showed a deputy striking 31-year-old Carlos Jose Leon Hernandez while a K—9 bit his arm during a late-night arrest outside a Denham Springs bar on August 27, and Hernandez is now detained on charges including resisting an officer and battery.  WBRZ
  • MADD Louisiana warns drivers to avoid impaired driving during Labor Day weekend as accidents rise from heavy traffic and partying—law enforcement will step up patrols to keep roads safe.  WVLA
  • On Friday around 6 p.m., a 26-year-old man with a past arson conviction shot a pedestrian on Barrow Street at the LA 1 intersection in Plaquemine before fleeing in a car—authorities later used license plate reader cameras to locate and arrest him on counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and the victim, who was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital, is now in stable condition while investigators continue to probe the motive.  The Advocate

  • Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre is planning its first season performance and auditions for The Nutcracker in the coming weeks—setting up a busy schedule for the company.  WAFB 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials surveyed the Chandeleur Islands on August 22 and spotted the highest number of turtle crawls since the surveys began. The coastal agency and partners will design a $380 million restoration project to add dunes, marsh, and sand reservoirs — a plan meant to help endangered sea turtles and slow island erosion.  The Advocate

  • LSU beat Clemson 17—10 in the season opener on the final Saturday in August. The Tigers rallied with a key fourth-quarter strike by tight end Trey'Dez Green after a tied half, and their defense held off late drives.  WBRZ
