ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday afternoon, a damaged tank burst at the Smitty's Supply cleanup site in Roseland—no one was injured and no further damage occurred as EPA crews assess the remaining tanks for pressure issues. WBRZ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Baton Rouge deputies arrested Jonavon Morris, 32, after he allegedly fired an AK-47 at a woman's car at the Murphy USA gas station near Central on Aug 28 at 9:30 p.m.—he is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal property damage. WBRZ
- ➤ A victim died after being shot near Smoothie King on Government Street in Baton Rouge—police are investigating an apparent drive-by shooting. WAFB 9
- ➤ Baton Rouge man Darryl Carter, 48, was arrested after a weekend dispute escalated into a shooting and police standoff on North 44th Street—he allegedly fired a shot after a verbal argument and passed an AK-47 to another man, and he now faces charges for attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Teachers in Baton Rouge stocked classrooms with supplies at the Raising Cane's River Center on Sunday—receiving pens, papers, and wellness kits. State Sen. Regina Barrow said the event helps ease financial burdens for teachers who spend hundreds to thousands annually. WBRZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Legislative Auditor's Office report said nearly $30,000 worth of equipment is still missing from BREC facilities, including mowers from Greenwood Community Park and a lawnmower from Dumas Memorial Golf Course. BREC is working with law enforcement to recover the stolen items and is reviewing its internal controls to help prevent future losses. WBRZ
- ➤ Zachary city council voted 3—2 on Aug. 26 to keep property taxes at 5.07 mills instead of raising them to 5.48 mills, which creates a shortfall of about $100,000 in the general fund budget. City officials will meet soon to find specific cuts to balance the budget. The Advocate
