COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Baker held its annual cleanup event today to encourage residents to adopt better trash management habits. The initiative led by Keep Baker Beautiful includes local students and community groups identifying and cleaning key areas—an effort to reduce litter and protect neighborhood value.  WAFB 9
  • Baton Rouge country musicians will perform at a free fundraiser concert for City Year Baton Rouge on Sept. 26 at Rhorer Plaza from 5 to 8 p.m.—the event in partnership with Live After Five will feature LSU’s rising country star, Timothy Wayne, and the Lauren Lee Band with all proceeds supporting local public school students.  WBRZ
  • East Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Darryl Hurst and Companion Animal Alliance will hold a free pet vaccine clinic at Glen Oaks Park Elementary School on Thursday, September 18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—pet owners can register at 4 p.m. and bring their pets for vaccines, pet food, leashes and collars.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student pilot Joshmond Cook from Baton Rouge has gained local attention on social media for his unique look including a flashy diamond grill and locs — his video received more than 30,000 likes. He said the feedback motivates him to inspire young Black students to follow their dreams — as he aims to boost diversity in a field where less than 5% of pilots are Black.  WBRZ
  • Superintendent Ben Necaise said if voters reject the Zachary Forward tax initiative this fall, the district must cut funds to give overdue raises of $10,000 to teachers and $5,000 to support staff—these cuts may lead to larger classes, fewer bus stops, and delayed building repairs. School leaders stress that the plan seeks to improve pay without raising taxes further.  The Advocate

  • LSU scientists developed a new AI model that forecasted Gulf hypoxia faster than older methods—this tool saved time by breaking down the 4,000 square mile dead zone that harms marine life and local fishing.   • Pennington Biomedical offered its Small Shifts program—providing one new nutrition tip each month—to help families make healthier eating choices on National Food is Medicine Day, September 14.  WVLA
  • Baton Rouge residents face high allergen levels this fall as ragweed pollen increases because the urban heat island effect (from heat-absorbing roads and devices) boosts local temperatures. Pollen levels have risen from medium-high in August and continue to trigger allergy symptoms in many people.  WVLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • DIRECTV reached an agreement to show Pelicans games on the Gulf Coast Sports — Entertainment Network, letting viewers in 14 markets access new broadcasts this fall. The channel will be available on DIRECTV, DIRECTV Stream, and U-Verse.  WAFB 9
  • LSU fans in Baton Rouge are excited as Tiger Stadium gets ready to host Florida later this season, with local LSU senior Jack Appleton predicting a 24 to 17 win and visiting fan Jared Bennett forecasting a 24 to 20 result — both fans expect a closely contested game.  WVLA
  • After beating Florida 20-10 on Saturday night, coach Brian Kelly dismissed reporters' questions about LSU’s offense that had one touchdown, several punts, and an interception—he said the team worked hard to win. He added that the offensive line must improve after losing four starters to the NFL draft.  WVLA
