GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • For the 2026 midterm elections, Louisiana lawmakers set new closed primary rules that require nonmajor-party House and Senate candidates to gather required signatures by nominating petition to qualify for the ballot—this change will likely limit the number of candidates compared to past races. The signature collection period runs from Sept. 16 to Dec. 17.  The Advocate
  • The Five Tributaries project has cleared lower Bayou Fountain, Ward Creek and Jones Creek to help protect Baton Rouge homes from flooding; this marks only 15% of work along 11.2 miles of waterways that drain into the Amite. Officials expect more than 300 land acquisitions and further construction tasks before the project is completed by the end of 2031—federal funds and local contributions support the estimated $255 million effort.  The Advocate
  • Louisiana has shifted one of its two pharmacy benefits contracts away from CVS Health as the state signed a $390.6 million deal with Liviniti’s Southern Scripts for commercial plans – while it retained a $748.8 million contract with CVS’s SilverScript for Medicare Part D. The new arrangement is expected to give more options to independent pharmacies and improve pricing transparency.  WVLA
  • On Oct. 11, East Baton Rouge voters will decide on renewing a ten mill property tax for downtown Baton Rouge that will run from 2027 to 2031. The tax is expected to generate about $740,000 a year to fund improvements—such as attracting new businesses, caring for public spaces, and hosting local events.  WBRZ
