COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today community members gathered at MLK Community Center to honor loved ones lost to homicide on National Day of Remembrance—each candle lit telling a story of shared loss and healing. The event connected families in their grieving journey as they remembered those taken by violence.  WAFB 9
  • Eight Baton Rouge teens shared that violent videos on social media have made them feel numb and less shocked by the events they see. They said constant online exposure and school safety drills make them worry about their safety — a sign their generation is anxious.  WVLA
  • Baton Rouge Zoo is hosting its 11th annual Brew at the Zoo event today from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., where visitors can sample unlimited beer and food, listen to live music, and visit with animals (tickets range from $30 to $150).  WBRZ
  • City leaders in Baker announced additional days for the Buffalo Festival that began yesterday at 4 p.m. The celebration will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. — featuring a carnival in the park, rides, food and games that are free to the public.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rêve Coffee Lab has set up its new pop-up on Government Street in Mid City between Baraccuda Taco Stand and The Parker Barber and is serving espresso drinks, pour-overs, matcha and fresh pastries today on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the shop will expand its hours to four days a week in October as it grows its offerings.  225 Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • LSU's Museum of Natural Sciences has nine habitat dioramas that display carefully curated specimens from as early as the 1900s, with some exhibits dating to the 1950s. Researchers use LSU-funded studies—such as genomics and vertebrate curation—to record new species, having identified 165 animal species so far.  LSU Reveille
  • More than 1,700 Native American remains dug up in the 19th and 20th centuries are still held by museums and universities despite a 1990 law designed to return them to tribes—tribal leaders say delays in repatriation hinder efforts to honor their ancestors by restoring dignity to their cultural heritage.  The Advocate
  • Autumn has arrived in Baton Rouge and the LSU Rural Life Museum and LSU AgCenter Burden Museum and Gardens will host fall events with live demonstrations, corn mazes, storytime and birdwatching for families. The museums offer Harvest Days on Oct 4–5—Haints, Haunts and Halloween on Oct 26—Storytime on Oct 11 and Nov 8—Birding sessions on Oct 20 and Nov 18—and a Night Maze and Bonfire on Oct 25.  225 Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Meta is constructing a $10B data center in rural Richland Parish that will need over $3B in new power infrastructure, with the company set to cover half the cost over 15 years. Local officials and consumer advocates are questioning how Meta’s confidential deal will affect electric rates and who will ultimately pay—sparking concerns about rising costs and community impact.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders said Entergy crews installed 407 new LED street lamps in Scotlandville as part of the Lighting up Baton Rouge initiative to boost safety and visibility. The new lights replace older ones and include 50 on Plank Road with more upgrades planned soon—efforts designed to improve local neighborhoods.  WAFB 9
  • An audit released last week alleged two cases of misappropriation in Ascension Parish, including drainage work on private property and use of a government vehicle for personal reasons, which caused losses of $30,530 — with $21,765 and $8,765 in each case. The report also noted issues with grant revenue reconciliation and the disposal of federally funded equipment, and the government has adopted new policies to prevent similar problems.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Registration is still open for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Baton Rouge, with the event set for Saturday morning at 9 a.m.—more than 50 teams and 200 participants have signed up to help raise funds for care, support, and research. Organizers will hold a Promise Garden Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. where each flower will honor a loved one while aiming to reach a $65,000 goal.  WVLA
