Good morning, Baton Rouge. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 28th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LSU clubs worked together yesterday to pack care packages for people reentering society after long prison stays—students filled tables with essential items and personal notes to help those released rebuild their lives. The packages will be delivered to the Parole Project for further support.  LSU Reveille
  • McKowen Missionary Baptist Church and other community groups hosted a Faith and Justice Prayer Breakfast Saturday morning to pray and talk about social issues in Baton Rouge—State Representative Terry Landry shared his vision for justice while locals registered to vote.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new study shows that truancy in schools jumped to 40% statewide and Pointe Coupee Parish has the worst numbers with two out of three students missing classes. Superintendent Kim Canezaro said her district is fighting the problem—using daily attendance reports, home visits by a dedicated deputy, and urging parents to keep kids in school.  WBRZ
  • New data on Louisiana student attendance shows that Ascension Parish recorded a low truancy rate of 20.6% while other parishes like Pointe Coupee had rates as high as 66% following the pandemic. The Louisiana Department of Education and BESE will launch a statewide attendance strategy to support districts facing high absenteeism—an effort to improve academic outcomes.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louis Lambert, a longtime Louisiana state senator & PSC member who narrowly lost the governor race in 1979, died Saturday in Sorrento from liver cancer at age 84. He was known for his work on utility oversight and for co-drafting the state constitution.  The Advocate
  • Early voting has started for the Oct. 11 election in Louisiana—voters can now cast ballots ahead of election day.  WAFB 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baton Rouge General and Mary's Hands Network added 25 volunteers to their doula program last Saturday and the new trainees began interactive training sessions that included practical exercises. They offered support to expecting families+ helping with comfort during labor and postpartum recovery.  WBRZ
  • Albertsons Companies recalled five deli items with bowtie pasta on Saturday due to a possible Listeria risk, including two products sold in Louisiana—Ready Meals Pesto Bowtie Pasta Salad and Basil Pesto Bowtie Pasta Salad—with the pasta made by Nate’s Fine Foods in Roseville, Calif, and the FDA advising cleaning any contacted surfaces.  WBRZ
  • Albertson's voluntarily recalled five store-made deli items after it learned bow tie pasta noodles may be contaminated with Listeria (a bacteria that can cause serious illness in young children, the elderly, and pregnant women). The recall affects products sold in Louisiana and other states, and consumers are advised not to eat these items while following FDA cleaning guidelines for surfaces that may have been exposed.  WVLA
  • Researchers from Northeastern and Yale found that Louisiana ranked 49th overall on climate and health measures because many health care facilities face high flood risk and other natural hazards, even though air quality ranked ninth nationwide. Local groups in New Orleans and Baton Rouge are working to add cleaner energy and safer building methods—steps expected to lower risks in the coming years.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU lost its Magnolia Bowl game to Ole Miss 24-19 in Oxford — a 50-yard catch-run by Zavion Thomas helped build the lead as key turnovers played a part, and LSU will play South Carolina on Oct. 11 in Tiger Stadium.  WBRZ
  • Fans gathered at Southern’s campus on September 27th to cheer on the game and enjoy a lively tailgate where they compared the bands — Southern’s Human Jukebox and Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South — as the teams played.  WBRZ
