COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Companion Animal Alliance will host its 10th annual Cap City Beer Fest on Nov. 2nd in downtown Baton Rouge — a dog-friendly event featuring craft beer, food trucks, live music and a homebrew competition — to raise funds for the only open-intake animal shelter in the parish.  WVLA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In September, Baton Rouge saw several new business openings including a new Drago’s Seafood Restaurant in Perkins Rowe and a scratch-made bakery called Cheesecake Lab on Jefferson Highway. Other launches include BRMS Creative as a creative hub for local musicians, a revamped City Slice Pints + Pizza on Nicholson Drive, a jewelry shop by Embark Fine Jewelry, and a Rêve Coffee Lab pop-up that will expand its hours in October—bringing fresh choices to the community.  225 Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • This Saturday, Oct. 4, the Federales Fest will be held at Live Oak @ Cedar Lodge—located at 6300 Jefferson Highway—where country, rock 'n' roll and Americana music will entertain, and activities such as a mechanical bull ride and a kids' ninja obstacle course will add extra fun.  225 Magazine
  • Johnnie Jones, a Purple Heart recipient who landed on Normandy and was wounded on Omaha Beach, also helped organize a Baton Rouge bus boycott shortly after law school — his life shaped both wartime and civil rights history before he passed away in 2022 at 102.  WBRZ
  • Knock Knock Children's Museum will host its annual grown-up gala this Friday at Dalrymple Drive from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.—the event features an ancient Greek theme inspired by D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths and will raise funds for museum educational programs while encouraging costumes or cocktail attire.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The John B. Cade Library on Southern University’s campus was evacuated due to a potential threat—authorities are investigating and the library remains closed until further notice.  WAFB 9
  • Zachary High School senior Zahara Firven was selected for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy of Baton Rouge for the 2025-2026 school year and will join a program that transforms students into real entrepreneurs—she will gain mentorship from local business leaders and LSU business resources. Firven will participate in CEO roundtables, community pitches and a graduation event scheduled for spring as she develops her business plan.  The Advocate
  • Southeastern's Nursing Program was named seventh among the top 10 accelerated BSN programs nationally for 2026 by RegisteredNursing.org, making it the only Louisiana school in the top 25. The program has a strong track record with high NCLEX-RN success — it also received its seventh Nightingale Award from the Louisiana Nurses Foundation.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center unveiled a new mural outside Cosey's Barbershop on Plank Road in north Baton Rouge on Sept. 30. Officials said the artwork—painted by California-based artist Venazir Martinez—reminds everyone that equal access to clinical trials is essential.  WAFB 9
  • The Fall Into Wellness event will take place Saturday, Oct 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the COX Communications building to offer free health screenings, hands-on activities, youth programs and live bands—hosted by The BRidge Agency and Sen. Regina Barrow along with other community groups.  WVLA
  • Our Lady of the Lake Health announced plans for a new 10-bed observation unit in Livingston Parish to let patients who need extra care remain near family. The $5 million expansion is set to open in early 2026—partners like Acadian Ambulance will help ensure safe transfers when needed.  WVLA

  • A Baton Rouge family is grateful after being surprised with a fully furnished home in a collaboration between former NFL player Warrick Dunn and Habitat for Humanity. New homeowner Shenique Holliday said the gift, which includes a stocked fridge, gives her children a safe place to grow — she plans to host gatherings in their new home.  WVLA
  • On Tuesday, dozens of occupants were evicted from Boardwalk Suites Hotel as operator Jason Trindade halted payments over a broken fire safety system that his landlord, Manan Patel, was responsible for fixing — Trindade has filed a petition for an ordinary hearing while residents were told they might return on Wednesday. The dispute has raised safety concerns and left many questioning when the hotel will reopen.  WBRZ
