COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Elizabeth Pfifer will become the new president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank effective November 1 — she brings international nonprofit experience and plans to expand services for local families.  WBRZ
  • St. Francis Xavier Church is hosting its Homecoming Fair at 1130 South 12th Street this weekend—where food, drinks, carnival games and rides for kids are offered. The fair starts at 3 p.m. today and opens at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Baton Rouge officials have demolished 125 abandoned homes—82 more are being demolished—to boost neighborhood safety and increase property values.  WVLA
  • Addis officials secured $7.5 million to extend Peter Messina Lane by 6,200 feet — giving residents and first responders an alternate route when rail crossings block the main road — and construction will take about five years. Residents have long suffered delays from trains that stop traffic and risk safety.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Capital Area Autism Network is hosting the first State of Neurodiversity in Baton Rouge Conference to bridge the gap between families with neurodivergent kids and local resources — the event brings together parents, educators, healthcare providers and officials to expand support services. Attendees will share experiences and learn about available local help.  WAFB 9
  • Baton Rouge General hosted its pink pumpkin patches on Oct.2 as part of a breast cancer awareness campaign, giving away 5,000 free pumpkins — the event also offered photo ops, treats and extra pumpkins for sale to remind people to get their yearly mammogram. Hospital staff hoped the campaign sparked needed conversations about early detection.  225 Magazine

  • LSU head coach Brian Kelly said quarterback Garrett Nussmeier did not worsen his ab strain against Ole Miss — he added that the bye week will help him recover. The team will play South Carolina on Oct. 11 with the kickoff time to be announced.  WBRZ
  • Marquise Franklin led the Eagles with 25 carries for 184 yards and five touchdowns — Parkview Baptist earned its first win of the season with a 42-14 victory against St. Martinville last Friday under the new Devin Ducote era.  WAFB 9
