- ➤ The Baton Rouge Police Department held a fundraiser on Friday for Deputy Chief Myron Daniels who is battling cancer—officers sold jambalaya lunches in front of headquarters on Airline Highway and all proceeds went to his family. WBRZ
- ➤ Tomorrow, Magnolia Mound on Nicholson Drive will host a pumpkin patch event from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. — the Friends of Magnolia Mound and East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners will sell pumpkins, honey and sugarcane to support the Kitchen Garden. WBRZ
- ➤ Scotland residents will meet BREC Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons at a community town hall in Scotlandville on Wednesday, Oct. 8. WVLA

- ➤ Downtown Development District and LSU's Small Business Development Center are offering free Friday consulting sessions to help Baton Rouge businesses improve their plans and secure funding. The sessions support current owners and new entrepreneurs looking to grow in the area + create a sustainable downtown. WBRZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ LSU MANRRS is a professional organization that offers networking and skills-building events for students in agriculture and sciences through conferences and workshops. The group plans to expand by partnering with Southern University to create a joint junior chapter—boosting membership and community service opportunities. LSU Reveille
- ➤ EBR Schools will host Magnet Mania this weekend—an event to display student work in its magnet programs and attract future students. The program will highlight projects on special topics and show the district’s best magnet initiatives. WAFB 9
- ➤ At Helix Aviation Academy, a first grader surprised the kindergarten to 2nd grade principal, Erica Jackson, a two-time breast cancer survivor, with a heartfelt poster for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Kayleigh Paul and her mom got supplies to make the gift that brought tears and a warm smile to Jackson’s face — a reminder of strength and hope. WBRZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ascension Parish council unanimously ratified new appointments for three top officials—Ricky Compton as chief administrative officer, Ruth Phillips as infrastructure division director, and Daniel Helms as transportation director—while President Clint Cointment said the changes build depth in his government team based on past successes. The Advocate
- ➤ Starting Nov. 1, the Baton Rouge office of the Louisiana Department of Revenue will no longer accept cash payments to improve payment efficiency, and taxpayers must pay by check, credit or debit card, money order, or online. WBRZ
- ➤ The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board approved a $40 million bond on Oct. 2 to give high schools money upfront for new tracks, football fields, and other projects with funds available as soon as December—officials will use a scoring rubric to fairly distribute the money based on each school’s needs. - ➤ On Oct. 2, 2025, students and SDS members gathered at Free Speech Alley to protest Gov. Landry’s plan to deploy up to 1,000 National Guard troops to Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport—organizers said the move threatens local Black and poor communities. They also demanded that charges be dropped for arrested SDS members from an LSU event, with court dates pending. LSU Reveille
