COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LSU’s Pi Beta Phi sorority held its annual Arrowspike beach volleyball tournament on Sunday at Mango’s Outdoor Volleyball to raise funds for its national literacy program—an effort to help children learn to read. Seventeen teams competed and the event exceeded its goal by raising over $25,000 from registration fees and local sponsors.  LSU Reveille

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Hotel Indigo in Baton Rouge was sold last Friday to Alabama-based A&R Group after Project King LLC closed the deal with an undisclosed sale price. The 93-room hotel had a $10 million Red Stick industrial makeover last year and will keep its current branding and staffing as the company expands its Gulf Coast presence (adding another property in Metairie).  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Baton Rouge-based 13th Gate was named one of the top haunted houses in North America by HauntWorld—one of only three in the South and the only Gulf Coast attraction on the list. The attraction has drawn thousands of visitors during its 20-year run in downtown Baton Rouge and offers 13 themed realms for a truly eerie experience.  225 Magazine
  • Today, the Manship Theatre Gallery will host a free artist talk at 5:30 p.m. with local painter James Michalopoulos showing his new exhibit 'Happy Times, Summer in the City,' and the LSU Rural Life Museum will hold a free author talk at 6 p.m. where Kodi Roberts discusses New Orleans voodoo history with a book signing—kicking off a busy cultural day in Baton Rouge. Wednesday, Capitol Park Museum runs a lunch talk on Louisiana folklore from noon to 1 p.m., and the Manship Theatre will feature a jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. with the River City Jazz Masters led by Tito Puente, Jr.  225 Magazine
  • Louisiana Art and Science Museum will host its upcoming Puttin' On The Ritz Gala as Kay Gaudin and Becca Bartlet explained that the event will benefit museum programs. More details about the time and location are expected soon.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU executive Robert Twilley said LSU is planning a new cooperative extension service to give clear, science-based energy information to local communities. The plan may build on LSU Ag Center and Sea Grant programs and will need more talks about money and keeping advice fair—officials expect further discussions soon.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana State Police, the Office of Technology Services and the Governor's Office are working to restore the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance after last week's outage. Educational institutions have been notified to work with affected students to minimize impact on the START system and college savings program.  WBRZ
  • East Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services is opening its new state-of-the-art facility on Connells Village Lane near the Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters today at 10 a.m.—local officials will host a ribbon cutting and media tour.  WAFB 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Louisiana faces a sharp rise in health insurance costs if the government shutdown ends enhanced ACA subsidies—a couple earning $85,000 could see their monthly premium jump from about $600 to $2,000. Nearly 85,000 residents may lose coverage as small-business owners and workers without employer plans have few alternatives.  The Advocate
  • Kroger has recalled Basil Pesto Bowtie and Smoked Mozzarella Penne salads sold in Louisiana after a supplier reported that the pasta may be contaminated (the recall affects stores in 28 states and advises customers to return or dispose of the products).  WVLA
  • RSV can be dangerous for vulnerable babies and young children as it can lead to severe illnesses—doctors recommend that pregnant women get the vaccine during weeks 32 to 36 or that infants receive RSV antibodies, urging parents to seek immediate care if symptoms like labored breathing or dehydration occur.  WBRZ
  • LSU’s Collegiate Recovery Program offers safe spaces and weekly meetings for students struggling with substance misuse and held a recovery event at Fall Fest on Sept 12 on the Parade Grounds in Baton Rouge, but funding cuts now threaten its services+ it is seeking grants and fundraisers to sustain help until April.  LSU Reveille
