- ➤ Help and Hope of Ascension and 411 for Women have joined forces to educate the public and support survivors of domestic violence in Baton Rouge. They will hold a Resilience Rising March on October 11 in Gonzales and a fundraising run/walk on October 19 at Independence Community Park to raise $25,000 for a new community center—an effort to drive policy change. - ➤ The nonprofit 2 The People will host a free family resource fair on Oct. 11 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on 185 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive, where families can attend workshops on parenting, health, education, and financial literacy. Childcare and lunch will be provided — registration is encouraged — to help connect families with essential services. WVLA

- ➤ Restaurant 1796 in St. Francisville partnered with Iverstine Butcher to host Steak Night Al Fresco every Tuesday in October from 5 to 8 p.m.—guests will enjoy open-fire grilled steaks and bottomless wine in The Myrtles courtyard. - ➤ The body of fallen Iberville Parish Sheriff Deputy Charles W. Riley was escorted from Broussard to the Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales on Wednesday after he was shot while interrogating a suspect on Monday at the Iberville Parish Courthouse in Plaquemine — many citizens lined the route to pay their respects. - ➤ Two LSU engineering students, Hobbs McAllister and Gabriela Theis Marchan, received the Donald W. Clayton Graduate Assistantship Award at the engineering building in Baton Rouge on Feb. 8, 2024—lowering financial burdens for their advanced degrees. McAllister’s stipend started at $28,000 while Theis Marchan’s began at $40,000 in her first year. LSU Reveille
- ➤ East Feliciana STEAM Academy student Daniel Brumfield grew and showcased a sweet potato on September 18 as part of his Intro to STEM Pathways course. Principal Kenyetta Washington said the project taught responsibility and problem-solving — linking science to agriculture. The Advocate
- ➤ A Baton Rouge father created the Leslie Elaine Guedry Memorial Endowed Scholarship by donating $23,000 to the Nicholls Foundation to honor his late daughter who served as a speech therapist in local schools. The scholarship will award $1,000 annually to full-time Nicholls State University students from Ascension Catholic or Assumption High School studying communicative disorders — the committee and a family appointee will select each year's winners. - ➤ Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill asked the Department of Justice on Sept. 24 to drop a $128 million lawsuit against insurers over an oil spill that has leaked from a Taylor Energy platform since 2004—she said the lawsuit harms local energy production and could limit future oil spill coverage. - ➤ West Baton Rouge voters will decide next month if they want to renew the drainage tax that failed before—this decision may affect local funding for drainage improvements. WAFB 9
- ➤ Kurt Wall was confirmed by the Senate on Oct 7—winning a 51-47 vote for a four-year term as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District. He is a longtime prosecutor from Livingston Parish and will manage federal prosecutions and represent the U.S. in civil cases. WVLA
