- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge started its 20th annual Women Build on Saturday to help build a new home for Ms. Shirley, a Baton Rouge grandmother of two, with women volunteers. - ➤ Organizers of the Fifolet Halloween Parade warned that rising police security costs may force the upcoming 15th event on October 18 to be the last one as new measures now require paying about $13,600 for extra officers. The group has seen fewer parade entries since 2020 and is struggling with a $62,000 budget, so it will soon decide if future events can be financially sustained. The Advocate

- ➤ Voters in a portion of Assumption Parish elected school board member Alexis Boutain to a permanent post on October 11. Boutain, who was appointed last winter (after longtime board member Electa Fletcher Mickens died), defeated challenger Chelsie Rodrigue by a 79% to 21% margin. WBRZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Atlantic Hurricane season of 2025 has spared Louisiana from landfalling storms while this week marks the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Delta’s 2020 landfall. In that year, tropical storm-force winds cut power to over 75,000 homes in East Baton Rouge Parish and heavy rains led to flooding along the Comite River — similar impacts were seen in West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee Parishes. - ➤ Voters in Denham Springs approved a parks tax renewal Saturday, raising about $4.25 million a year for 10 years by a 62% to 38% vote after previously rejecting the plan last December. The assessor's office said the current tax will fund the park system through 2026—results were reported from 26 of 27 precincts. WBRZ

- ➤ LSU football coach Brian Kelly held a post-game conference following the LSU vs. South Carolina contest—he previewed the next LSU game scheduled for Monday at noon. WAFB 9
- ➤ LSU fans gathered today at Alex Box Stadium for the Unsupervised Misfits tailgate as part of homecoming, moving from Touchdown Village because of construction. Leaders like Cody Ghiggia and Michael Cormier said they plan to upgrade their party bus — TUB 2.0 — next season while many LSU graduates shared in long-standing traditions. WBRZ
- ➤ Bethune-Cookman beat Southern 45-14 in Daytona Beach, marking the first win over the Jaguars as Southern fell to 1-5 on the season — the Wildcats scored 38 straight points after Southern took an early lead with a 71-yard touchdown pass. WBRZ
- ➤ At Death Valley, LSU secured a 3-0 early lead over South Carolina when defensive end Patrick Payton recovered a fumble on the Gamecocks’ first play to set up a field goal & the SEC Network broadcast the game to local fans.
