COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brittany Tully announced that the Baton Rouge Zoo will soon host Boo at the Zoo and Rumble in the Jungle events for families—details on dates and activities will be shared later.  WAFB 9
  • REV joined CoBank’s annual Sharing Success program to double its donation by giving $30,000 to three local nonprofits—Cooking in Central got $10,000, Foundation for Woman’s received $15,000, and Riley John’s Blue Boot Foundation received $5,000. The donations support programs in youth development, health care, food access and community building in our area.  The Advocate
  • LSU Burden Garden corn maze will open on October 18 and 19 at 4560 Essen Lane with daytime slots from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A night maze will run on October 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.—offering a unique fall activity for visitors.  WBRZ
  • The LSU chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary hosted Crafted for Change on October 8 to collect art supplies for local schools and community art projects, donating the items to The Walls Project's Little Art Library. The drive involved LSU Alpha Phi Alpha and the National Council of Negro Women and earned students community service hours—helping reduce waste by repurposing supplies.  LSU Reveille
  • More than 50 days after an explosion at Smitty's Supply plant in Roseland closed U.S. 51, local protestors gathered Tuesday at the intersection of La. 1048 and U.S. 51 to call on Gov. Jeff Landry (and the EPA) to restore access and address the chemical spills in the Tangipahoa River. They said residents still lack clear guidance on water testing and cleanup measures.  WBRZ
  • Major Reginald Brown started a group in 1987 that serves Thanksgiving meals at the River Center for the poor, elderly — his team partnered with St. Vincent de Paul in 2017 and has kept the tradition going through floods, freezes and a pandemic.  WBRZ

  • The Livingston Parish Library announced its featured authors for its 10th Book Festival scheduled for Oct. 25 at its Main Branch in Livingston. The lineup includes New York Times bestselling author Mari Mancusi & New Orleans-based Shannon Kelley Atwater, Caribbean-born Baptiste Paul & Baton Rouge native Rachel Marsh.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana Key Academy will host the Get On The Bus fundraiser at 5015 Auto Plex Drive on Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.—an event featuring interactive games, game-day foods, and a speech by Hall of Famer Kim Mulkey to support dyslexic students and raise money for a school bus. Organizers say the fundraiser will help provide a reliable means of transportation for students who benefit from a gold-standard education.  WVLA
  • Southern University's Class of 1975 celebrated its 50-year reunion brunch on October 14 at the Baptist Student Center on Harding Boulevard where alumni gave back to the school. The event lasted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (tickets cost $50).  WBRZ
  • Northwestern Middle School student Braydin Kenly—the only student in the state selected to join the Louisiana State Department of Education’s 2025 Physical Education Standards Review Committee—will help shape future guidelines for school physical education. Zachary Elementary teacher coach Kerri Lee was also chosen to serve on the committee and on the Governor’s state panel to revamp the Presidential Fitness Test.  The Advocate

  • Hunden Partners will issue an RFQ to shortlist developers for redeveloping River Center into a 350-room hotel with event space—featuring a ballroom, meeting rooms and a large flex hall. The firm will follow with an RFP and work on detailed planning and funding strategies to bring the project in line with Plan Baton Rouge III.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey announced her team is ranked No. 5 nationally as she begins her fifth season in Baton Rouge—returning two preseason All-SEC starters and adding a top transfer while the Tigers prepare to play free-to-attend exhibition games on Oct. 23 and 30 before opening their season at home against Houston Christian.  WBRZ
  • The Prairieville Hurricanes recorded their biggest varsity win on Friday at Hurricane Stadium by beating East Ascension, with quarterback Skyler Kelly hitting a 60 yard touchdown plus a defense that kept the rivals in check, while the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs opened district play with a shutout of 42 to 0 led by Trevin Simon's 293 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The teams continue to compete in district games as Prairieville now stands at 3 to 3 and Ascension Catholic will face St. John on Thursday in Plaquemine.  The Advocate
