COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, many people gathered across Louisiana for 'No Kings 2.0' protests to show their concerns with national policies. In Baton Rouge, hundreds stood in front of a park with drums and signs — similar events took place in Lafayette and Shreveport.  The Advocate
  • BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is hosting its annual Boo at the Zoo this weekend with new events like character meet-and-greets, magic shows, dinosaur experiences and a pumpkin patch—visitors can enjoy fun today from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and return on Oct. 25-26 for more spooky activities.  WBRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the 2025 AIA Louisiana Design Awards in Lake Charles, a jury reviewed 62 entries and honored winners from Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette and Hammond with six Merit Awards, two Honor Awards and one Members’ Choice Award, including RHH Architecture for its design of a grief and bereavement care facility. The projects ranged from restored historic buildings to modern restaurant renovations—each recognized for blending old and new design elements.  The Advocate
  • On Saturday afternoon, residents gathered in Sorrento for the annual Boucherie and Balloon Festival—which benefitted a local service club.  WBRZ
  • On Friday night, a few protestors held a picket line at The 13th Gate over its new séance attraction—while owner Dwayne Sanburn said the event remains a cherished local tradition despite claims it is sacrilegious.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU’s Project Wellness club works to destigmatize mental health and build a welcoming community by offering resources like suicide prevention, wellness, and trauma relief training; it uses committees such as fitness and music to help students de-stress—fostering a safe space for open conversation about mental health. Founded by Isabella Paul after inspiration from a similar group in Las Vegas, the club is open to all students who want support and connection.  LSU Reveille
  • Southern University held its homecoming with new security measures after recent HBCU threats—alumni and fans were divided on whether the enhancements were enough.  WAFB 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Asili, an 8-year-old endangered okapi at the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, is 14 months pregnant and expected to give birth later this year, a hopeful sign for the species. The animal care team monitors her pregnancy via a camera system — an effort to boost breeding success after a previous loss.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU Tigers fell 31-24 to 17th ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday in Nashville and dropped out of the playoff picture; they will host Texas A&M on October 25 as coach Brian Kelly said the team struggled to keep pace with Vanderbilt's big plays and timely field goals.  WBRZ
  • Southern University Jaguars lost their homecoming game to Prairie View A&M 24-3; athletic director Roman Banks said the team will evaluate the coaching process Monday & may consider changes as offensive struggles persisted. Head coach Terrence Graves has led the Jaguars to a 1-6 record this season, fueling concerns about the team's direction.  WBRZ
  • Southern University Jaguars trailed Prairie View A&M Panthers 17-0 at halftime after the Panthers scored a 15-yard rushing touchdown and added 14 points in the second quarter. Southern managed only four first downs by early third while quarterback Anthony Strother completed 7 of 10 passes for 43 yards.  WBRZ
