COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Help and Hope of Ascension and 411 for Women have partnered to raise awareness and funds to support domestic violence survivors—focusing on both emotional and physical abuse—with the goal of helping one person turn around their situation to benefit the entire community.  WVLA
  • The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is hosting its second annual 1 Million Steps 2 Safety—a certified 5K run/walk on Oct. 25 at 7919 Independence Blvd in Baton Rouge to boost pedestrian safety and fitness. The event welcomes all ages, offers awards for top finishers, and includes a jambalaya competition.  WVLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, built in 1796 and named the seventh most haunted house by National Geographic, offers tours of six old rooms and a bed and breakfast for guests looking for ghosts. The plantation also has community events & serves farm-to-table meals at its restaurant, keeping local ghost stories alive.  WBRZ
  • Baton Rouge's Christian Youth Theater is launching its 2025-26 season with Narnia, a play based on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe that opens Thursday at 7 p.m. at Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs. Additional shows—Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., plus school day performances on Thursday and Friday at 10 a.m.—offer more chances to see the play.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Baton Rouge leaders were honored with the Angel Award for making a positive impact on Louisiana students—officials said the recognition highlights years of dedication to improving local education.  WAFB 9
  • Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority's Nu Gamma Omega chapter will host a STEM science fair at Capitol Elementary School's Multicultural Center on Gus Young Avenue this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon—exhibits will feature hands-on activities such as slime making, robotics, drones, and liquid nitrogen ice cream funded by Dow Chemical and open to all school-age students and their parents.  WBRZ
  • More than 1,500 high school students from 44 schools will attend the Build Your Future event at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center tomorrow to learn about career options in construction and petrochemical industries — local leaders will provide hands-on demonstrations and interactive activities. This event aims to introduce students to high-paying, long-term career opportunities in these fields.  The Advocate
  • DEMCO has partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to offer free, high-quality books to local children from birth to age 5—families enrolling will get a new, age-appropriate book each month up to 60 books by age 5. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Housing Corporation launched the Blue Tarp Program to help Baton Rouge families repair storm-damaged roofs by providing up to $15,000 in grant funding. The initiative—supported by State Senator Regina Barrow—aims to keep residents in safe homes while officials plan to reopen applications when more funds are available.  WVLA
  • With the ongoing government shutdown causing uncertainty over paychecks, companies are offering discounts on home improvement, clothing, and cell phone plans for military members, veterans, and first responders. Consumers must verify their status online—using approved methods or proper government-issued ID—to access these savings.  WAFB 9
  • The Department of Transportation and Development will close one southbound lane of La. 77 daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Oct. 20 through Oct. 31 to let crews repair beams on Bayou Jacob Road—ensuring safer travel in Plaquemine.  WBRZ

  • North Oaks Health System will host its free Diabetes Symposium on Nov. 4 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center on its Hammond campus.   • The DEA’s Take Back Day initiative will accept unused prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at designated drop-off sites in Baton Rouge including Woman’s Hospital, the Police Department HQ, Zachary Police, Walker Police, and Plaquemine Walmart—helping to prevent drug misuse.  WVLA
