COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Baton Rouge Police Department invited residents to National Night Out Against Crime at the Inspiration Center on Tuesday—where they enjoyed live entertainment, free food, and family activities aimed at building a safer community. Local leaders were honored with a prestigious Angel Award in recognition of their impact on Louisiana students.  WAFB 9
  • The Baton Rouge Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Foundation announced that the Inspiration Center—built at Howell Community Park to guide local youth with technology, education, sports and mentorship—will open in January on Winbourne Avenue. Baton Rouge Police hosted National Night Out last night outside the center's site with safety demos, live music and free food.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Orvis will close its only Baton Rouge store at Perkins Rowe on Dec. 24. The store opened in 2008 and Orvis President Simon Perkins said the retailer plans to shutter 31 stores and five outlets by early 2026.  WBRZ

  • Emmy award winner Josh Gates will bring his live show to Raising Cane’s River Center on October 25th where he shares behind-the-scenes insights from Expedition Unknown — fans will also enjoy sneak peeks of his upcoming season featuring stories of lost treasures and bold adventures in Baton Rouge.  LSU Reveille
  • The Livingston Parish Book Festival returns for its 10th annual event on Oct 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Livingston Parish Library’s Main Branch in Livingston—offering a Renaissance-themed day with author talks, live music by Grammy Award-winner Louis Michot, interactive games, and free books for all ages.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Oaks Health System is accepting applications for its 2025 Medical Career Shadowing Program—offering students ages 14 to 20 the chance to observe health care teams in action and attend a career fair with professionals. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 12 and interested candidates can call 985 230 6811 to request an application.  The Advocate
  • Jackson Elementary School Pre-K students in (Michelle Bell and Trellia Freeman's class) began the My School and Me unit by practicing speaking and listening skills during a show and tell session. One student, Karter Brown, shared about his dinosaur on Aug. 27 as children talked about their favorite toys, books and interests.  The Advocate
  • Third graders at Zachary Elementary School learned about inventor Margaret E. Knight — known as Lady Edison — while taking on an engineering challenge by designing and testing seawall prototypes to reduce hurricane flood damage. They compared her creative process to the steps in the engineering design process and improved their models along the way.  The Advocate
  • Zachary’s The Little School held its Fall Fest on Saturday with a market, silent auction and an indoor Trunk-or-Treat after rain moved activities inside. Director Beth Inzenga said the event shows the school’s plan to offer pre-K and daycare all year and featured local vendors like Little Birdie Bakery—run by a mother and son honoring family traditions.  The Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Amite River Basin Commission approved a resolution allowing the City of St. George to join Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Iberville parishes in a $30 million Bayou Manchac restoration project. The project will restore natural channel features and realign Ward Creek in Bayou Manchac to improve drainage — with St. George monitoring progress while East Baton Rouge leads efforts.  WVLA
  • Officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries released about 1,500 young catfish into Taylor-Trahan Lake near Jackson on the north side of La. 10 to restore the fishery after local anglers reported fewer catches. A team later used electrical shocks to count the fish+ officials plan further assessments and possible releases of other species to improve the lake's health.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development reported that work is underway on a new northbound span for the Intracoastal Bridge in Port Allen as crews removed 85% of the old bridge to make way for the project. DOTD said extra lanes and shoulders will ease heavy La. 1 traffic—completion is projected for 2027.  WBRZ
  • The Louisiana Fire and Emergency Training Academy installed the state's first carbon dioxide pipeline training prop today at its Baton Rouge campus—ending the need for firefighters to travel to Texas A&M for similar exercises. The program, supported by ExxonMobil and state officials, will expand with more simulation scenarios to boost emergency response across parishes.  WAFB 9

  • ZHS Broncos lost their homecoming game 56 to 31 to the Patriots on Oct. 17 after fumbles and a weak passing attack let the opponent build a strong running game. The loss dropped their local ranking — leaving them to face tougher district matchups next.  The Advocate
  • Baton Rouge Zydeco hockey team will begin its third season with new coach Chad Bailey—fresh off a playoff run last season—and plans to add fresh talent as rising attendance boosts local support.  225 Magazine
