- ➤ Volunteers helped clean up the soon-to-be Mid City Civic Theater on Saturday at Florida Boulevard to ready the building for its upcoming opening. The former Theatre Baton Rouge — which closed in March — will host new productions, theater rentals, and arts education programs with its first shows scheduled for summer 2026. WBRZ
- ➤ Scotlandville Magnet High School hosted its first Homecoming Parade on Saturday, November 1 — a historic event that brought local families together — as the school celebrated a new tradition. WBRZ
- ➤ BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo hosted its Rumble in the Jungle car show last Saturday where car enthusiasts saw classic cruisers and custom builds at the zoo—which houses over 600 animals including more than 200 endangered species. All proceeds supported conservation and education initiatives. WBRZ
- ➤ On October 31, Baton Rouge hosted a gumbo cook off where local cooks competed to prepare their signature recipes—an event that brought community members together to celebrate local flavor. WBRZ

- ➤ South Louisiana businesses and nonprofits announced a range of personnel changes that will impact local leadership—LSU associate professor Ursula White was elected as secretary/treasurer of The Obesity Society with her new role set to begin in January while Dale Revelle was sworn in for a five-year term as a commissioner for the Port of New Orleans. Other appointments include Jeff Williams as the regional director for the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East, promotions at McGlinchey Stafford, recent law school hires at Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann, a new optometrist at Eyecare Associates, and judge Shannon Bruno Bishop joining the board of workers’ compensation agencies. - ➤ Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church hosted its fifth annual Music on the Mount event — local community members enjoyed musical performances. WBRZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ East Baton Rouge Superintendent LaMont Cole presented a preliminary list of 57 improvement projects at 14 high schools Saturday—these upgrades, which include sports, art, and classroom renovations, are estimated at $37 million. He said a final list will be released in January with a board vote later that month, and work will begin in February. The Advocate
- ➤ Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University was awarded a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support Project FRANCIS— a program offering summer bridge, tutoring, and mentoring for pre-clinical and clinical students. The project will strengthen pathways for nursing and boost enrollment to meet the growing need for healthcare professionals in our region. WVLA
- ➤ State Superintendent Cade Brumley has boosted Louisiana schools' reading scores and teacher pay but faces criticism for ending equity programs—he plans to roll out new math reforms as he works to close achievement gaps. The Advocate
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport launched a food drive on Wednesday to support its TSA and Air Traffic Control teams who worked without pay due to the government shutdown. Donations of canned and non-perishable items can be dropped off at the front terminal or on the second floor (the drive will continue until further support is needed). WBRZ
- ➤ The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced that the 2025-26 duck hunting season will begin in November with a youth-only hunt in the West Zone on Nov.8-9—with regular hunts starting on Nov.15 in the West and a youth and veterans event on Nov.15-16 followed by additional hunts in the East on Nov.22. Hunters 16 and older must carry a Federal Duck Stamp or proper hunting credentials, and several Wildlife Management Areas including Pass-a-Loutre WMA, Atchafalaya Delta WMA and Pointe-aux-Chenes WMA will host the events. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Student leaders from the Red Cross Club at LSU and campus organizations installed free smoke alarms during their Sound the Alarm event on Saturday to help families set up home fire escape plans and learn to replace older alarms. Backed by the American Red Cross and the Department of Public Safety's guidance, the event aimed to reduce residential fire deaths—70 lives were lost this year—by reminding residents to update alarms older than 10 years.
