COMMUNITY NEWS

  • EBR Council on Aging held a food giveaway for seniors on Monday, November 3rd at 10 a.m. at Lotus headquarters (965 N. 18th Street) in Baton Rouge.  WAFB 9
  • Several local restaurants and community organizations are stepping in as the government shutdown disrupts SNAP benefits. Jabby's Pizza and Albina’s Catering launched their No Kids Go Hungry Week campaign today—running Nov. 4 to Nov. 9—with free cheese pizzas for SNAP card holders, led by Albina Brahimi who recalls her childhood hunger.  WBRZ
  • The Livingston Parish Library is taking part in the 21st annual Sock It To Me Holiday Sock Drive organized by Family Resource Group Foundation. People can drop off (new, unused) socks at library branches through Dec. 12 to help The Family Village support children affected by traumatic separations.  The Advocate

  • 225 Magazine marked 20 years by releasing its biggest issue yet on stands now—highlighting Baton Rouge’s evolution with stories on local history, recipes, dining trends, sports and future projects.  225 Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EBR Schools launched its annual Adopt an Elf program on Monday to brighten the holiday season for students in need by letting community members adopt a student online until Nov. 21. Gifts must be brought in a gift bag at Broadmoor Elementary (Dec. 2–Dec. 4, 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m.) and monetary donations are welcome (in addition to gifts).  WBRZ
  • Southeastern Louisiana University is hosting its annual Veterans Day Lecture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 11 at the Student Union Theatre. Retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré will share his experiences and views — the event is free and open to the public.  The Advocate
  • A new report warns that the state’s Early Childhood Education Fund may soon have to cut the number of families it serves if more money is not added. Experts say nearly 1,000 families risk losing access to affordable, high-quality child care by 2030—forcing many parents to choose between work and child care.  The Advocate
  • Parents in Baton Rouge can get help with EBR Schools magnet program applications at four in-person sessions offered this November from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sessions are at Southeast Middle today, Istrouma High on Nov. 6, Scotlandville Middle on Nov. 12 and Broadmoor Elementary on Nov. 13—families should bring all required documents.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Build Baton Rouge invites residents to take a short survey to help shape a new five‑year plan that focuses on improving neighborhoods, public safety, housing, and business growth. The survey takes five to 10 minutes — it offers a chance to win one of five $100 Visa gift cards and will remain open until Nov. 30.  WVLA
  • The LSU Board of Supervisors will choose a new president today by reviewing three finalists+ James Dalton from University of Alabama, Wade Rousse from McNeese and Robert Robbins from University of Arizona. Board members will also discuss the system’s structure for its eight campuses.  WVLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former LSU Baseball star Tre’ Morgan, a New Orleans native who helped LSU win the world series in 2023, was named a recipient of the Minor League Rawlings Gold Glove Award on November 2 when he posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with the Durham Bulls—his strong defense earned him the honor—marking a season of solid play.  WAFB 9
