COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ascension Parish shoppers can attend the Merry Market 2025, a family shopping event held from today through Sunday, November 9 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales featuring over 400 vendors selling clothes, food, books and decor. A VIP experience will be available on Saturday for $20, while general admission tickets start at $10 and part of the proceeds will go to the Sparrow Foundation — volunteers are also needed.  WVLA
  • Girls on the Run will host an upcoming 5K fun run — Carley Wahlborg Fuller and Elise Jones provided details about the event for local community members.  WAFB 9
  • Stevie Lynch of Lucky 7's Barbershop in New Roads launched a food pantry to help local families during the holiday season — he set up a central donation spot inside the shop and plans to move it outdoors for privacy.  WAFB 9
  • Mysti Byrnes explained that new vendors and events are planned for the Red Stick Farmers Market—details will be shared soon to improve the market experience.  WAFB 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Louisiana chefs showcased the state's culinary tradition in New York last week as Baton Rouge’s Russell Davis and Chef John Folse led cooking events at Chelsea Market on Oct. 28 and the James Beard House on Oct. 29 — efforts coordinated by the Louisiana Travel Association and the state tourism office, while several south Louisiana restaurants were also named on the Michelin Guide’s inaugural 2025 Recommended List for the American South.  225 Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU's cybersecurity program gave students hands-on training that prepared them for real-world jobs, and recent graduate Arushi Ghildiyal landed a cybersecurity role at Chevron after joining challenging classes plus participating in the Cyber Clinic. Department chair Abe Baggili said the program offers strong theory and practical skills to boost student success.  LSU Reveille
  • Jan Breen, a 1969 graduate with 53 years in Catholic education, announced her retirement as president of St. Joseph’s Academy and will step down in June—she will serve as president emeritus and help with the search for her successor. Principal Stacia Andricain said the school will continue its progress with new programs and campus upgrades under Breen's lasting influence.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a joint complaint with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Justice against Smitty's Supply following an explosion and fire at its Roseland plant in August — the complaint alleges that the company's cleanup and oil spill prevention efforts were inadequate, allowing pollutants to travel 47 miles downstream and noting previous permit violations.  WBRZ
  • Food banks are facing increased demand as the government shutdown continues while the Louisiana Department of Health said federal SNAP benefits will be distributed today and furloughs for SNAP staff have ended — offering needed relief for eligible residents. Local officials also report that the Baton Rouge mayor expects job cuts in the city-parish government and Gonzales police are searching for a missing teen.  WAFB 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Thomas Flynn, founder of The NeuroMedical Center Clinic who advanced specialized neurological care in Baton Rouge, died Nov 6. He began his career in 1967 and established the clinic in 1978 (serving over 125,000 patients each year) and his legacy will guide its future.  WVLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU will face No. 4 Alabama tomorrow night as interim head coach Frank Wilson leads the Tigers in a reset after Brian Kelly’s firing last week — the team aims to avoid a third straight loss by relying on refreshed practices and key players like quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.  WAFB 9
  • The LSU men's hoops team won 96 to 60 against Tarleton State in Baton Rouge as Max Mackinnon scored 19 points and Dedan Thomas Jr. added 16 points and eight assists. The 1-0 Tigers will host New Orleans on Monday night — a match that will open their season schedule.  WJBO
