- ➤ The Sherwood South Animal Hospital is filling a gap during the government shutdown by stocking a pet food pantry for pet owners in need; administrator Ashley Bodin said community members have been donating food to the facility (open 24/7) while the hospital partners with Dodge City Veterinary Hospital in Denham Springs to reach more families. - ➤ Veterans were honored at a luncheon at Occasions Unlimited Banquet Hall in Baker on Thursday before Veterans Day, with local veterans receiving meals and tokens of appreciation. Organizer Patrick Alexander said — noting the community's gratitude for their service — that the event was his way of giving back. WBRZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Three Baton Rouge charter schools — CSAL Middle, The Emerge School for Autism and South Baton Rouge Charter Academy — received preliminary four-year renewals from the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Thursday, and a final vote on November 20 will decide if their charters avoid expiring in June. The Advocate
- ➤ Louisiana State University’s School of Information Studies was awarded a $91,430 grant to help Vietnam veterans preserve personal and service records and will launch a two-year planning project that brings together libraries, archivists, and veteran service organizations—continuing work from a previous Virtual Footlocker Project. - ➤ The Diocese of Baton Rouge said Davis will step down as superintendent of 30 schools at the end of the year and be replaced by assistant superintendent Cindy Ryals. Ryals served 15 years as principal at St. Alphonsus Catholic School + earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Southeastern and will start her new job in January. WBRZ
- ➤ The Diocese of Baton Rouge announced that Dr. Mary Patricia Davis’ time as Catholic schools superintendent ends on Dec. 31 and that Dr. Cindy Ryals (former principal at St. Alphonsus) will start the role on Jan. 1. The diocese runs 30 schools serving over 14,000 students and said the change will help keep its Catholic education strong. WVLA
- ➤ Today, the Louisiana Wild Society hosts its Re-Wild the Library event at the Main Library (7711 Goodwood Blvd) in Baton Rouge to celebrate native plants and teach locals how to create home gardens. The free event (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) features education, vendors, and an art market. WVLA
- ➤ University Lab School—Louisiana's first STEM-accredited school—held a STEAM Day celebration for International STEM Day where students built structures, met robots, and cared for a simulated patient while director Rob Lyles said the event helps prepare them for future challenges. WBRZ
- ➤ LSU freshman Kent Broussard, aged 66, joined the Golden Band from Tigerland and was featured on the Kelly Clarkson show on Thursday—he enrolled at LSU and relearned music to march down Victory Hill as the oldest band member. His journey shows that dreams can be pursued at any age. WBRZ
- ➤ LSU Student Senate passed legislation at Capital Chambers that bans any discriminatory statues on campus — including a proposed statue for Charlie Kirk — to counter a divisive environment. The Senate also approved a motion asking the Office of Financial Aid to improve scholarship notifications, with the measures receiving widespread support from the senators. LSU Reveille

- ➤ Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy sent letters to Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons this week because they worry imported shrimp might have the radioactive substance Cesium-137. The senators urged the stores to check shrimp safety and to buy more from US fisheries, asking for a reply by Nov. 20 (the FDA issued eight alerts since August) and a report from the GAO (which found less than 1% of foreign food facilities were inspected). - ➤ BREC Commission created a special committee to guide a lakes master plan that will shape the area into a recreation destination—its members include commissioners, parish government reps, and representatives from groups like the LSU Foundation and BRAF following intense debate over park changes. The move comes after community concerns were raised about excluding Friends of City Park from the process. The Advocate

- ➤ Capitol Wellness Solutions, Louisiana’s first licensed medical marijuana dispensary, will open its new Prairieville location on Nov. 15 with a ribbon-cutting at 9:30 a.m. at 17097 Airline Highway. The grand opening will offer free medical marijuana card consultations with a licensed doctor, live music, local vendors and giveaways—featuring a live alligator display and a new promotion called the Munchies Map that gives discounts at five local restaurants to help patients manage anxiety, depression, insomnia, PTSD and chronic pain.
