COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, the 39th annual Thanksgiving Zydeco Food Drive in Baker brought together artists, promoters and business owners to raise money for food during the upcoming holidays. The event took place at The Showroom on Plank Road—doors opened at 6:30 p.m.  WBRZ
  • 225 Magazine looked at common complaints about Baton Rouge and found local facts show that young people can build careers, traffic is manageable, crime has dropped, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy life - local guides and groups highlight these positive trends.  225 Magazine
  • In Baton Rouge, Hope Ministries reported a surge in food pantry use as SNAP benefits were halted during the ongoing federal shutdown, which left many families struggling to feed themselves. The organization now serves over 800 families and is calling on local residents to donate food, funds, or time to help maintain its supplies.  WVLA
  • The iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is hosting Meat-Up events today at two Shoppers Value locations on Government Street (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Old Hammond Highway (2 to 5 p.m.), and will be at two other Baton Rouge sites on Friday. It will also visit Kenner for a Touch-a-Truck event and the Food Truck Festival later this weekend.  WBRZ
  • The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, a hot dog-shaped promotional vehicle, will visit Baton Rouge this month to showcase Oscar Mayer products—stopping today at Shoppers Value at 5355 Government St. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at 13555 Old Hammond Highway from 2 to 5 p.m., then tomorrow at Shoppers Value at 5963 Plank Road in Baton Rouge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at 280 Main St. in Baker from 2 to 5 p.m.  WVLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • On November 12, Manship Theatre opened its downtown spaces to host corporate events and local groups like TedXBaton Rouge — the new program expands its offerings beyond movies and live music — to provide more venues for community gatherings.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU Ambassadors in yellow polos welcome new students and Baton Rouge families to campus with service and leadership. They select new members through a two-month process and lead weekly service projects (such as work with local clubs) to help everyone feel welcome.  LSU Reveille
  • The Louisiana Department of Education said on Wednesday that half of kindergarten through third-grade students are reading at or above level, with third-graders up by five points and small gains in other grades—this is the highest overall proficiency score since the screens began. Officials say the improvements reflect the strong work of dedicated teachers.  WBRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Build East Baton Rouge is asking planning and development experts for a roadmap to revitalize two North Baton Rouge catalyst sites and attract jobs, services, and investment. Proposals are due by noon on Nov. 21 — the project is funded by the Delta Regional Authority and will boost local economic growth.  WVLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • In November during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Ochsner Health in Baton Rouge is using a new robotic platform to reach deeper areas in patients' lungs and detect cancer earlier—doctors say the method reduces traditional biopsy complications from 25% to 2%.  WBRZ
  • Lung cancer survivor Chris Hebert launched an awareness drive in Baton Rouge by installing white flags on Capitol grounds—each flag representing five lives lost last year—and he urged groups like the Longevity Foundation and LSU's American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative to support screenings and further research.  WVLA
  • A new LendingTree study showed that Louisiana had the third-highest diabetes rate in the nation with 14.5% of adults diagnosed. The report noted a 1.8% rise in cases and treatment costs that increased 769% since 2000 (rising to nearly $159 billion in 2022) (data highlights a growing health challenge).  WVLA

  • Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly is suing LSU for his full $54 million buyout—his attorneys claim his firing was without cause while LSU argues he was not formally terminated—and he rejected earlier settlement offers of $25 million and $30 million.  WJBO
