COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, November 16 from 4–6 p.m. at Court To Table on Burbank Drive to help the family of fallen Deputy Charles Riley and support the recovery of Cpt. Brett Stassi Jr.—Louisiana leaders including Gov. Jeff Landry, Attorney General Liz Murrill and District Attorney Tony Clayton, along with co-hosts Ty Bromell and Gordon McKernan, are raising funds for funeral, medical and related expenses.  WVLA
  • Baton Rouge households still need food support as the holidays approach even though SNAP benefits will return next week. Capital Area United Way is offering meals, food boxes, and assistance — serving an average of 250 callers each month.  WBRZ
  • Ruby Slipper and Ruby Sunshine have launched a donation campaign to fight food insecurity by supporting Second Harvest Food Bank—customers can donate $1, $3, or $5 with funds distributed every two weeks, and the Weishaupt Family Foundation will match donations up to $15,000 until Dec. 20. This effort targets families across 23 parishes affected by rising food insecurity during the holidays.  WVLA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Belle of Baton Rouge Casino closed at 2 a.m. on Nov. 14 and will reopen as Bally’s Baton Rouge Hotel on Dec. 6 pending approval from gaming regulators — which include the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, the Gaming Enforcement Division, and the Louisiana State Police. The casino thanked guests for their support as it moves to its next chapter.  WVLA
  • Stir Coffee House opened on Halloween along Airline Highway and drew long lines of customers for its coffee, dirty sodas, and local treats. Owner Katie Jenkins started the shop to offer jobs for people with intellectual and developmental differences + about 80% of the staff fit that category, while the shop partners with Strides of Louisiana to promote inclusive hiring.  225 Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Metro Rouge Fall Festival will take place at the Main Branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library along Goodwood Boulevard on November 23 from noon to 7 p.m. The free event will feature local arts and hometown music aimed at families.  WBRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by Luxury Link using 2024 TSA data found that BTR saw an average of 1,199 passengers daily during the holidays compared with 1,309 on nonholiday periods—a drop of 8.4% that ranked it 160th among over 360 nonhub primary airports.  WVLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Baton Rouge city officials approved tax rebates today to support major concerts at Tiger Stadium—helping boost local cultural events and attract new shows.  WAFB 9
  • The Louisiana Department of Health announced it will distribute all federal SNAP funds within a week, with households that received only partial benefits getting the remainder on their regular distribution day—while seniors and disabled recipients will receive extra funds on Thursday.  WBRZ
  • Residents will share their ideas for downtown Baton Rouge’s next 10 years at the Shaw Center for the Arts on Monday, Nov. 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.—planning staff will show how previous feedback is shaping a unified vision for future projects.  The Advocate

  • Baton Rouge General has installed new natural gas generators at its Bluebonnet and Mid City hospitals to keep the whole campus powered during hurricanes and outages—ensuring that lifesaving equipment and patient care continue uninterrupted.  WVLA
  • Capitol Wellness Solutions opened its final medical marijuana dispensary in Prairieville on 17097 Airline Hwy last week and will celebrate its grand opening today— the location features interactive displays and a munchies map linking patients with local restaurants.  The Advocate
  • The Louisiana Department of Health named Seth J. Gold as its new Medicaid director on Friday, November 14th. He brings 10 years of federal health policy experience—having advised on Medicaid, CHIP, and the 340B Drug Pricing Program—to help improve care for Louisiana residents.  WVLA
  • A new report from Affordable Dentures and Implants found Louisiana ranked 34th nationally for oral health, showing 40.7% of residents did not visit a dentist last year, 39% of seniors lost at least six teeth, and 8.2% lacked dental insurance—making it one of the top 10 states for tooth loss. The study compared CDC and US Census Bureau data to create the ranking.  WVLA
