COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Student Philanthropy Council organized a two-week food drive for the LSU Food Pantry to address rising food insecurity, and the drive ended last Friday after an event in Free Speech Alley where students received free jambalaya and brownies—boosting donations. The final food total will be announced on Tuesday.  LSU Reveille
  • BREC announced Zoo Lights will return to the Baton Rouge Zoo from Nov. 28 to Dec. 30—excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day—and guests who donate a nonperishable food item will receive half-price admission while helping the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank reach its goal of 8,000 pounds of food; Santa is set to visit on select Fridays and Saturdays before Christmas.  WAFB 9
  • St. Vincent de Paul distributed 175 food boxes to families in need on Saturday — donations came from community contributions during the government shutdown — as dozens of cars lined up to pick up the boxes.  WAFB 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU is reviving its Corps of Cadets program so that civilian students can join military-style leadership training and prepare for high-demand careers—retired Lt. Col. Rico Alvendia said the change honors LSU’s history while boosting enrollment. Supporters hope the program will strengthen Baton Rouge and the state’s workforce—students like Rose Gautreaux expect it will lead to real career opportunities.  WAFB 9
  • On Saturday, Southern University hosted a Jaguar Preview at F.G. Clark Activity Center where about 4,000 prospective students and family members took part in campus tours, academic showcases, and live performances by the gospel choir and cheer team — students also ran through a tunnel onto the field before the game against Texas Southern University, while university leaders including Chancellor John K. Pierre addressed the crowd.  WBRZ

  • Get Fit Gym in Baton Rouge is now offering an adult tumbling class every Tuesday for those who want to try cartwheels, tumbles and flips—this class builds strength, flexibility and proper technique for both beginners and former athletes.  WBRZ

  • Southern lost 35-30 to Texas Southern after turnovers ended their early 21-7 lead on the Bluff. The Jaguars (1-10) will prepare for their season finale against Grambling at the Bayou Classic on November 29.  WBRZ
  • Louisiana high school football playoff scores from week 1 have been released showing varied outcomes across Non-Select and Select divisions — with East Feliciana beating Delcambre 44 to 6 along with many other matchups across Divisions I through IV.  WBRZ
  • LSU soccer won a 4-1 home game over Houston Christian on Friday night and secured a spot to face Iowa in the NCAA Tournament second round.  WBRZ
  • The Tigers trailed 14–0 against Arkansas in Death Valley on Saturday morning in the Battle for the Golden Boot when Razorbacks scored a touchdown on a 52–yard drive and LSU trimmed the deficit to 14–7 on their first play of the second quarter. The game aired on the SEC Network.  WBRZ
  • The Southern University Jaguars lost to the Texas Southern Tigers 35-30 on November 15 at A.W. Mumford Stadium—Texas Southern built a strong second-half lead that left Southern trailing—in a tight game.  WAFB 9
