COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A 15-year-old from Baton Rouge received a bionic arm after local donations raised over $24,000 needed for his Hero PRO—he was born without his right hand due to Amniotic Band Syndrome. John Francis said the new arm makes it easier for him to play video games and ride his bike—crediting strong community support.  WBRZ
  • Must Luv Dogs Rescue in Zachary joined 2UNE In to share how Raising Cane's will donate proceeds from each 'A Christmas Story' themed plush puppy sold at its restaurants—donations that will help cover vet bills, supplies and foster care. The plush puppies cost $10.99 with tax while supplies last.  WBRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On November 28th at 5:36 PM, Ascension Parish Firefighters put out a large grass fire in a field off River Road in Darrow using seven grass fire trucks and two engines — over 26 firefighters from six departments responded at the scene.  WBRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Louisiana Lights returned for its second year at the Burden Museum and Gardens on Friday, giving visitors a festive journey through gardens and tunnels of light with food and drinks available during the holiday season — the event features three specialty nights, including Mistletoe and Moss on Dec. 3, Barks and Bright Night on Dec. 10 with a $5 dog admission, and a university discount night on Dec. 17, and offers timed entry every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. until Dec. 30.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Southern University System President Dennis Shields said he was stepping down after the board signaled a new direction following nearly four years and he will take a six‐month sabbatical before teaching at Southern Law Center. The board also kept former football coach Terrance Graves on in an athletic department role—he will earn at least $75,000 a year, with his new duties starting in January.  WBRZ
  • Former Southern University System President Dennis Shields gave an emotional farewell speech Friday to the board as he prepared to step down after four years and take a six-month sabbatical before teaching at the Southern Law Center. The board also approved a new role for former football coach Terrance Graves—fired amid a poor season—under a separation agreement that will pay him at least $75,000 a year.  WBRZ

  • The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will end tomorrow with 13 named storms and 5 hurricanes, although Louisiana remained unaffected as a high-pressure system kept tropical storms at bay—researchers noted that even isolated powerful storms like Hurricane Melissa pushed the season just above average in energy.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Louisiana may soon expand access to psychedelic research as a state Senate task force—led by Senator Patrick McMath with support from veterans like retired Major General Glenn Curtis—explores new treatments for PTSD and addiction. Studies at LSU Health Sciences are testing psilocybin for meth addiction while experts warn that safety risks with ibogaine mean more trials are needed before any law changes take effect next spring.  The Advocate

  • Every Thanksgiving weekend, alumni and families gather in New Orleans for the Bayou Classic to enjoy parades, vendor markets, and a long-loved football tradition.   • LSU women's basketball broke the NCAA record by scoring over 100 points in seven straight games when they beat Marist 113-53, and they will face Washington State tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Paradise Jam—Freshman Zakiyah Johnson led with 19 points and strong all-around play.  WBRZ
  • True freshman running back Harlem Berry had an eventful season at LSU — his parents watched him learn and grow while he made key plays and gained valuable experience. LSU continues to build its team as Berry's progress raises hope for greater success.  WAFB 9
  • Baton Rouge area high school teams played in quarterfinal games ahead of the LHSAA State Championship in the Superdome in two weeks—Catholic-BR beat Alexandria 44-6 and Zachary edged Central 31-27 while teams in Divisions II, III, and IV also advanced.  WBRZ
  • LSU men's basketball beat Drake 71-62 on November 28 with Dedan Thomas Jr. scoring 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Tigers remain undefeated and will face DePaul today at 6 p.m. in the Emerald Coast Classic.  WBRZ
