COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local teen John Francis received a prosthetic hand after community donations raised $26,000 for the Open Bionics Hero Pro; the new device helps him dress, attend school, and participate in karate + his mother said it has boosted his confidence and independence.  WAFB 9
  • Donated coats will go to about 300 students and families in East Baton Rouge Parish today as the school system partners with Good Fellows—Good Samaritans to meet winter needs. School counselors identified students and organized the collection before winter break.  WAFB 9
  • Rescue Alliance signed a lease for a new shelter that will expand its capacity to offer safe lodging, medical care and lifesaving services for homeless cats and kittens—its team and volunteers will begin preparing the facility over the next week while it awaits permits and accepts donations for supplies.  The Advocate

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Denham Springs High School community is mourning student *Adelie Latta* who died after fighting injuries from a November car crash for *27 days* in a hospital.  WAFB 9
  • Denham Springs High School mourns senior Adelie Latta, a powerlifter who fought for 27 days after a car crash over the weekend before passing away—her mother said Latta, who was an organ donor, will be honored with a memorial walk to be announced later.  WBRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community leaders held the 10th annual The Difference Is Us event on Monday in Baton Rouge to raise awareness of high HIV rates among Black women. Health officials stressed that testing, education and access to preventive tools such as PrEP are crucial steps to reduce new infections.  WVLA
  • LSU counselor Raime Thibodeaux said students facing seasonal depression can get help at the Student Health Center—services include individual therapy, group counseling, same-day access, and virtual appointments through Uwill on the second floor. She noted that with stress from academics and shorter days, students should try healthy routines like regular sleep and exercise to manage mood—wait times have reached up to three weeks this semester.  LSU Reveille

  • Florida hired Tulane’s Jon Sumrall as the Gators’ next head coach on November 30 when they finalized a six-year deal averaging nearly $7.5 million per year—his record includes a 42–11 mark in four seasons at Tulane and titles from his time at Troy.  WBRZ
  • Lane Kiffin wasted no time finding a hot yoga studio in Baton Rouge after he was named LSU head football coach; he visited Yogalates Fitness Studio on Monday morning and was introduced by LSU at 3:30 p.m.—his quick move marks the start of his new role.  WBRZ
  • Southern University has hired Marshall Faulk—a Pro Football Hall of Famer who recently served as Colorado’s running backs coach—and will introduce him today as its new head football coach after firing Terrence Graves last month following a 1-6 start.  WJBO
  • LSU named Lane Kiffin as its new head football coach after he left Ole Miss on Sunday. He signed a seven year deal worth $12 million a year and will not coach the Rebels in the postseason.  WJBO
