  • Jewel J. Newman Community Center will host its inaugural Polar Express Holiday Experience on Dec. 14 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 2013 Central Road in north Baton Rouge (with support from District 2 Councilman Anthony Kenney), offering toy giveaways, hot chocolate stations, face painting and a trolley ride.  WVLA
  • Scammers are using dubious toll-road texts, fake charities and package theft schemes to profit from holiday distraction, and residents are urged to verify deals by visiting official retailer sites (AARP Fraud Watch Network advised caution).  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Baton Rouge Community College will launch a new plumbing apprenticeship program next year in partnership with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association of Louisiana. Enrollment is open for spring 2026 and students will train on-the-job and in classrooms at the Acadian campus plus the upcoming Capital City Construction lab at Mid City.  WBRZ
  • Denham Springs High School, the largest in the state with 2,374 students, is expanding its campus by renovating nursing classrooms and upgrading sports facilities + adding a new field house set for completion by month’s end.  WBRZ

  • LSU Athletics renewed its longtime partnership with Nike through 2036, adding Tiger athletes to the new Nike Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program + building on a five-decade connection that will offer student-athletes fresh branding opportunities.  WBRZ
  • Sportsline Player of the Week: Jayden Obiekwe rushed for 269 yards and six touchdowns in Riverside Academy’s win last week — the Rebels now prepare for the state championship game on Thursday at the Superdome.  WAFB 9
  • LSU’s board ratified a $91 million deal for new football coach Lane Kiffin and signed additional agreements for assistant coaches on Thursday, with interim coach Frank Wilson set to earn bonuses if the Tigers win the Texas Bowl later this month in Baton Rouge.  WBRZ
  • Southern women's basketball earned consecutive Power Four wins with a 63-57 victory in Tucson and a 70-62 win in Houston under coach Carlos Funchess. Today the Lady Jaguars face Southern-New-Orleans at 11 a.m. at FG Clark Activity Center before challenging Baylor next Thursday.  WAFB 9
