COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy offers free prescription medication for Baton Rouge residents in need and is run by volunteers — donors can drop off medication Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  WAFB 9
  • Local community agencies are sharing details on available warming centers and shelters today as frigid temperatures persist in Baton Rouge. Residents are urged to check (online or community postings) for updated support information.  WAFB 9
  • Assumption Parish law enforcement said Monday that the Belle River Bridge is closed to boat traffic because low water levels cause operational issues — the boat parade scheduled for Saturday will now start at Graveyard Island and finish at the bridge instead of continuing to Bayou Godell.  WBRZ
  • Carolyn Gee and Brad Moore are hosting a Christmas toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 20 to support local families during the holiday season.  WAFB 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, dozens gathered outside the State Capitol to light the first Hanukkah candle amid increased security, as community leaders (including Rabbi Peretz Kazen) said the event brought warmth and resolve after a recent attack in Australia.  WBRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Supporters of the proposed St. George school district are preparing a public marketing campaign launching in January ahead of the May 16 vote. If approved, the new district will start in July 2027 as the fifth in East Baton Rouge while local groups hold panels to discuss the plan's challenges.  The Advocate
  • LSU President Wade Rousse and Executive VP James Dalton have signed contracts extending through 2030 with base salaries of $750,000 plus performance bonuses tied to funding, graduation rates and research milestones. The contracts also provide perks like housing, a vehicle allowance plus faculty roles even if they leave leadership positions.  WBRZ

  • Fire officials in Baton Rouge urge residents to check their smoke alarms as temperatures drop below freezing. They note that only two of 63 house fires—with 82 fatalities this year—had working detectors.  WBRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, a Virginia Tech transfer, was named to the AP All-America team on Monday after playing 358 snaps in pass coverage, allowing 13 catches for 147 yards, and became the fourth LSU player honored in three years.  WBRZ
  • Marshall Faulk has been hired as Southern University's head football coach and will earn $1.2M over three years (at $400K per year and with a $950K assistant pool) as he replaces Terrance Graves, who remains with the athletic department.  WBRZ
  • Dunham students celebrated a state football title on Monday when the Tigers beat Calvary Baptist 34-17, marking their first win since 2004 and the only Baton Rouge-area team in a state title game. Mayor-President Sid Edwards declared the day 'The Dunham School Day' during a pep rally at the school gym with cheerleaders, coaches, and band members.  WBRZ
