  • Big Mike's Sports Bar hosted a give-back event Tuesday, donating (10% of proceeds) from dine-in and takeout orders to support the family of Denham Springs High student Adelie Latta, who died after a car crash following weeks of hospitalization in November.  WBRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The city of Zachary announced a free Business Startup Guide to help residents launch new businesses by providing step-by-step instructions and local support. Available at the city annex on 4650 Main St, the guide offers extra assistance from the Economic Development Office.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Southern University Human Jukebox received the key to the city from Mayor Sid Edwards on Tuesday, Dec. 16 in Baton Rouge after being named ESPN's Band of the Year following a contest with Florida A&M University’s Marching 100.  WAFB 9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana farmers saw a 52.3% drop in exports to China, with soybean shipments falling 48%, losing $1.85 billion. A Farm Flavor analysis (using USDA data) shows the decline hit the state hardest in 2025.  WVLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana public libraries welcomed over 11 million visits in 2024, marking an 8.56% increase from the previous year. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said the figures show libraries remain key learning centers plus vital community hubs.  WVLA
  • North Oaks Health System welcomed 72 students into its 2025-26 Medical Career Shadowing Program on Dec. 2. Participants from 16 schools (including local high schools and a community college) will shadow clinical and non-clinical roles during winter and spring breaks to gain real-world health care experience.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • General Counsel Gwynn Shamlin of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system received a two-year contract extension on Monday, which raised his pay from about $170,000 to $238,000 plus a $3,600 car allowance.  The Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane was named first-team All-American by FBS head coaches and is now a consensus All-American — having also earned honors from the Associated Press and Walter Camp. In 358 pass coverage snaps he allowed just 13 receptions, 147 yards and six first downs.  WBRZ
  • On Dec. 12, the Dunham Tigers beat Calvary Baptist Academy 34-17 at the Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans to win the Division III state championship, with junior quarterback Elijah Haven setting records; Mayor-President Sid Edwards declared Dec. 15 as Dunham School Football Team Day.  225 Magazine
  • West Feliciana High Saints volleyball player Rylie Berry signed with Millsaps College to advance her career from high school play. She will join the college team for the upcoming season.  The Advocate
  • LSU's Jayden Daniels will miss the rest of the Commanders' season starting with Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries. Coach Dan Quinn said (part medical, part team) the decision will let him practice and heal.  WVLA
