Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.
Good morning, Baton Rouge.
ExxonMobil announced a $100 million upgrade at its Baton Rouge plant to produce ultra-pure isopropyl alcohol for advanced computer chips—this work will create 45 construction jobs, begin this year, and lead to production in 2027.
The company will also direct sales and use taxes from the facility to help address neighborhood blight.
Ian Seghers, 34, was arrested in Mississippi over the weekend on an unauthorized motor vehicle charge and is linked to the disappearance of his stepfather Keith Rowland—who was reported missing earlier this month—and he will be extradited to Baton Rouge as detectives continue to investigate possible foul play.
A Livingston man pleaded no contest to vehicular homicide for killing 19-year-old Caleb Easterling while driving under the influence and was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday, with court records stating he will serve three years without benefit of probation—charges for vehicular negligent injury were dismissed.
Police arrested a 17-year-old Parkview Baptist student—accused of calling bomb threats into the school.
Baton Rouge firefighter Bart Perkins faces an arrest warrant for DUI after he crashed a city vehicle—officials said he was allegedly under the influence of opiates.
An appeals court barred defense from using the sexual history of former LSU student Madison Brooks in rape cases against Carver and Carter as evidence since it violates the state's rape shield law — a ruling that prosecutors said stops the use of prejudicial material.
LSU will launch a new four-year online degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration to train fire chiefs and emergency managers—local students in two-year programs can transfer credits to complete the degree; the program is set to start next fall.
Zachary High School held its eighth annual Special Needs Prom where community and student groups helped special needs students get ready for an evening at the Academic Athletic Center—DJ Coach Q provided music, treats, and dancing.
East Baton Rouge Parish voters will decide on two proposals in the March 29 election—one to adopt a Home Rule Charter for St. George that gives the city new governing powers and another to extend the Wedgewood Crime Prevention and Improvement District fee, which will support law enforcement and local improvements. The fee ranges from $95 to $400 per year and is expected to generate about $60,825 in its first year.
On March 26, former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy ran a 4.50 40-yard dash and jumped 36 inches at LSU Pro Day—he faces criminal charges from a December crash that killed a man and that could hurt his NFL Draft chances.
